Want to boost your earnings? Now is a good time to change jobs or even careers, says the REC

The latest industry research brings positive news, including about earnings, for active and passive jobseekers alike – a trend that doesn’t show any signs of giving up anytime soon. The update will be welcome reassurance for those currently looking for a new job or career, and a point of enough interest to pique the attention of those happy with their existing roles.

UK employers appointed permanent staff, via recruitment agencies, at the quickest pace in a record 27 months – according to the REC/Markit Report on Jobs which presents July’s data. Temp billings faced a similar fate, with an improved growth rate that marked a near two-and-a-half year high.

These positive findings follow increased activity since the previous month. Sharp rises in demand for permanent staff was reported across all of the report’s monitored sectors – notably in Accounting/Financial, one of our specialist sectors, which ranked second on the list. And with a total Vacancy Index listed as “well above the no-change 50.0 threshold at 63.4”, demand for overall staff rose at its joint highest pace for 23 months.

On the flip side, the availability of both permanent and temporary candidates continued to experience a sharp decline in July – suffering its biggest fall in a year and a half. Kevin Green, REC Chief Executive, highlights London as the worst affected, with employers in the Financial Services industry “not hiring in their usual quantity as the uncertainty caused by Brexit makes them hesitant.”

In turn, employers are not only feeling the pressure to retain their current staff, but also attract new recruits where possible via financial means. The industry body’s report shows that starting salaries for permanent placements rose further in July, reaching a 20-month record in the wake of fewer highly skilled applicants. Temporary staff can also look forward to a warm reception, as hourly rates continued to increase sharply in July. This continued rise in earnings suggests that now’s the best time to take advantage, and change jobs or even careers!
